Assignment 21A: Reading Reflection No. 2

For this post, students have been asked to complete their second of three reading reflections for this semester. The book that I chose was The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki. I found this book to be a quick read that’s packed with great information. I would consider it a must read for almost any modern-day business owner. Let’s jump into it!
1)      What was the general theme or argument of the book?
This book is an informative text that gives the reader over 100 tips for social media success. The tips spread across all major platforms, and teach skills like optimization, gaining followers, and curating great content.
2)      How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
This book helped me to see ENT 3003 from a more 21st century perspective regarding networking and influence.
3)      If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
Since this class is primarily blog posts, I think I would tweak some of the overall requirements based on what I learned. I would place a bigger influence on formatting for gaining traffic to our individual blogs.
4)      What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
My biggest surprise was finding out that Google+ existed, and that people use it. There is an entire social media world out there ran by one of the largest companies in the world that I did not even know about. Aha!

  1. I think it is important in a very technologically evolving world that businesses and entrepreneurs use social media in order to drive their content forward. I found it funny that you didn't know about Google+, especially since this blog automatically liked my Google+ account. Google+ did not take of as a social media platform because of the invite system- you could only make an account when someone invited you. This exclusivity was intriguing at first, but quickly dwindled out because it was impossible to reach people outside your "circle" and was simply lacking as a social media platform. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram are more popular because people from all over the world can see your content and therefore promotion of products or service is a lot more easier.

  2. Hey Michael! You read The Art of Social Media, and from the title already I think I have a good idea of what the book was about. I realized how social media is so important when it comes to creating your own business, you need the people on your side which operates the businesses. What I found very interesting was the 100 facts on how to improve one's skills with social media. And from that, I like how you said that you improved in the skills yourself. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Hey Michael,
I did not read the Art of Social Media, but I enjoyed learning about it and how it connected to to the class through your perspective. This book is especially applicable to entrepreneurs in today's day and age because of the focus on social media. Social media is such an important part of today's society, and the amount of content that one can promote through either personal or business accounts can make or break the success of a venture in today's climate. As the technology continues to evolve, businesses will inevitable be the same to either succeed or fall to the wayside. Thanks for sharing!
